Oulu and Lapland

Lapland Finland

When I was studying at university, I decided to spend a semester abroad. I received many good recommendations for the city of Oulu, so I applied to the university there.

Oulu – The City in the North

Oulu Finland
Cycling City and Student Life

The city is very quiet and has very good infrastructure, especially for cyclists. People cycle there year-round — even at minus 30 degrees Celsius. That is truly incredible.

I quickly got used to it and soon explored the city on my bicycle. There are many ways to enjoy your time in this city, but I was mainly interested in traveling and discovering.

Kemi, Rovaniemi and the Lapland Experience

Kemi SnowCastle Finland
Ice Castles and Santa Claus

There are several places with very interesting attractions, such as ice sculptures. I visited two ice castles, including the famous Kemi SnowCastle. These are truly impressive places.

Near Oulu lies the well-known city of Rovaniemi, where Santa Claus Village is located. This place is right on the Arctic Circle. There you can meet Santa Claus and send postcards "from Santa Claus".

Finland is overall very quiet. The people seem reserved but are very kind and helpful. Overall I enjoyed this time very much and learned a great deal about myself.
